Pantone’s Color of the Year: 18-3838 Ultra Violet

2018 is Purple!

Each year, our friends at Pantone Color Institute decide on a ‘Color of the Year’ and for 2018, the color is 18-3838 Ultra Violet. I’m sure the first questions on everyone’s mind is, “How did they decide on this particular color for this particular year?”  According to Pantone, the self proclaimed ‘color authorities, “As individuals around the world become more fascinated with color and realize its ability to convey deep messages and meanings, designers and brands should feel empowered to use color to inspire and influence.  The Color of the Year is one moment in time that provides strategic direction for the world of trend and design, reflecting the Pantone Color Institute’s year-round work doing the same for designers and brands.”

Why Ultra-Violet? In this dark and chaotic time we are living in, I’m sure the obvious choice would have been dead black or a dark charcoal gray, but Pantone has an interesting perspective on the current state of the world and how that can be symbolized through color.  Ultra-Violet 18-3838 is described as, “Inventive and Imaginative, Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.”

Leatrice Eiseman, executive director at Pantone Color Institute states, “It is seen as provocative and thoughtful.  It communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future.  It’s also the most complex of all colors because it takes two shades that are seemingly diametrically opposed- blue and red and brings them together to create something new.  It’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today.” There seems to be an inherent optimism about this color that sets a specific mood we could all use a bit more of.

Let’s talk The Arts

Ultra Violet is mysterious and imaginative.  It has a direct correlation to the mysteries of the cosmos, space, new discoveries, intrigue, and limitless possibilities.  It is symbolic of the counter culture, unconventionality, and artistic brilliance.  Think music… What artists remind you of Ultra-Violet?

  1. Jimi Hendrix

  2. Prince

  3. David Bowie

These guys were pioneers and trailblazers in the music industry and saw the future before anyone else did.  Their music invoked an almost supernatural feeling, a sound no one had ever heard before with limitless possibilities.  Rest in Purple, Legends!

How can you bring the Purple Rain to your life? To your home?

There are some simple ways to incorporate Ultra Violet in your life to provoke imagination, creativity, and optimism for the future.  In your home, try using this color in creative spaces (perhaps in a room where you play music, exercise, or work).  In gathering spaces (like the living room, dining room, and kitchen) try utilizing ultra violet to energize and inspire connections.  Painting a wall or an entire room can be a bit of a commitment for some, but there are some tasteful ways to introduce Ultra Violet into your home through objects:

  • Candles

  • Kitchen Appliances

  • Teapot

  • Fresh Flowers

  • Kids Toys

  • Dish Towels

  • Yoga Mat

  • Picture Frames

  • Drapes

  • Rug

  • Accent Wall

Sometimes we just want to escape this over-stimulated world, which many of us already try to do through different forms of exercise, relaxation, and meditation. Try using purple-toned lighting in the spaces designated for such activities.

Pantone’s Color of the Year has brought a unique perspective on the current state of the world.  It brings unparalleled optimism and an excitement for what is next.  It brings mystery, inspiration, and unbelievable amounts of imagination.  Ultra-Violet can enhance your home or work space to energize, inspire, and communicate originality and ingenuity.  Ultra-Violet is making 2018 look brighter, bolder, and promising!
